What has changed on the NCLEX?

The licensing exam for U.S. nurses is the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination). The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) developed the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) that began April 2023. The goal of the NGN is to modernize the NCLEX and ensure that it continues to effectively assess the competence of entry-level nurses.

The NCLEX will place increased emphasis on assessing the clinical judgment and abilities of nursing candidates. Clinical judgment is the ability to make sound decisions in complex patient care situations. The exam now includes more questions that require critical thinking, prioritization, and analysis of clinical scenarios. The NCLEX includes a variety of alternate-format questions to assess the candidates’ knowledge and application of nursing concepts. These formats include multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blank, ordered response, and more. The use of alternate-format questions helps to evaluate candidates’ ability to think critically and apply knowledge in real-world scenarios. The NCSBN updated the NCLEX test plan in 2019 to reflect the changing healthcare landscape and ensure that the exam remains relevant and comprehensive. The integrated test plan organizes the content categories based on the percentage of questions in each area, with increased focus on areas such as pharmacology, health promotion, and cultural diversity. It’s important to remember that specific changes and updates to the NCLEX may occur periodically. To stay informed about the most recent changes, visit the official NCSBN website or consult with your local nursing regulatory body. State nursing boards are state-specific regulatory entities that issue nursing licenses and set standards for the practice of nurses within its jurisdiction.
